Saya Kubota (1987- ) graduated from University of Tsukuba, department of Fine Art, and been in Doctor Course of Tokyo University of the Arts from 2012. Kubota has been exploring the values of new age with her unique perspective, experimentally using various materials. In the last solo exhibition, Kubota gained attention with her delicate and peculiar style of works using singes on paper.
In this exhibition, we will highlight not just Kubota’s techniques but her other important aspect.
Kubota has commented on this exhibition :
“ I am interested in relics, fossils, clay vessels from the ancient times and mineral ores, things that has archaeological value. Those things are being present as archeological existence longer than as its original object, and it tells us something more than its original function or meanings.”
Kubota has been using the method of singeing and deteriorating paper by compulsion, or rusting metal on purpose to compress time and history. At the same time, the act of ripping off the subject matter from the motif is to question the value of the object itself, as relics and fossils still exist in the archeological value after its former function is forfeited.
Kubota connects the concept of values in parallel that across time and history.
